Surface video formats and how to transfer files to Surface

To be honest, Android tablets and iPad is the mainstream of the tablet market. Few people select Windows tablet, maybe the price of Windows tablets are too high. Or people have accustomed to the user interface of android or iOS. Since it was released, Surface sales is not satisfactory. In my opinion, it’s a Office Tablet more than a personal entainment product. Anyway, everyone has their own needs.

Maybe you are just a Surface user, it is very natural to transfer files from PC to Surface, and vice versa. However, some people have issues when they transfer files to Surface RT tablet. Just like this:

I’m trying to convert an MKV file to MP4 for playing on Windows RT tablet. The output MP4 file is not corrupted and saved on a local and external disk, but always with the same result: fail to transfer to my tablet. I need help urgently please.

If you also have such issues, this article must be useful for you. Actually, there are two easy methods to add music, pictures, and videos to your Surface, you can pick using one of the following methods:

- Use a USB flash drive or a memory card — microSD, microSDHC, or micro SDXC cards all work with Surface.
- Connect to a networked computer

Solution One: Use a USB flash drive or memory card to transfer videos to Surface RT

Surface with Windows RT includes a full-size USB 2.0 port. You can also transfer files to Surface, by copying them to a USB flash drive or memory card (microSD, microSDHC, or micro SDXC cards all work with Surface) and then adding the files to Surface.

Step 1. Copy files onto a USB flash drive or memory card on your other computer.

Step 2. Insert the USB flash drive or memory card into Surface.

Step 3. Tap or click the notification that appears in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Step 4. Tap or click Open folder to view files. File Explorer opens.

Step 5. Select the files or folders you want to add to Surface, tap or click Home, and then tap or click Copy to

Step 6. Select a location. For example, choose Documents if the flash drive or memory card contains documents.

Solution two: Access/Download videos from home network to Surface RT

Microsoft bundles Office 2013 Home & Student Edition with your purchase of the Surface RT. This means you can access all files in your Homegroup, access shared folders from other computers on your network, and even map network drives which will automatically reconnect upon restarting the machine. As you can see from the screenshot below, Windows RT is functional well beyond the Start screen tiles and “Don’t call it Metro” interface.

Surface can access music, pictures, videos, and documents on computers that are part of your home network. To see the files and folders that have been shared on your network, go to theStart screen and open File Explorer. Shared items appear under HomeGroup or Network

When you transfer video files to Surface for playback, you should make sure the video files are compatibled well with Surface. Thus, just let’s have a look at the video formats supported by Surface.

As you see, MKV, MPG, VOB, TiVo, MTS formats are not supported by Windows tab. You can’t play such 1080p videos on Surface unless they are encoded into Surface 3/Surface Pro 3/Surface 2/Surface Pro 2/Surface RT/Surface Pro supported formats

Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate/iMedia Converter for Mac has Surface oriented presets that supports converting and compressing 1080p MKV, MPG, VOB, TiVo, MTS to MP4 or AVI so that you cantransfer and play any videos on the Microsoft Surface and all the other Windows slabs.
